How does Credit Counseling work?

Anyone overburdened by credit obligations can contact our office for an appointment. A professional counselor with previous financial management experience will counsel the client to prepare a monthly family budget, and if appropriate, formulate a plan acceptable to the client and the creditors for paying all debts. The plan, when followed, will normally be all that is required unless some emergency or change in financial situation arises.

To insure the success of the program, cooperation between Credit Counseling, the client and creditors is vital, especially during the first 30-45 days of the repayment plan. The client must adjust to a new budget and the creditors must be patient while waiting for their first payment.

What is expected of Credit Counseling clients?

That information provided to Credit Counseling regarding net income, living expenses and debts be as accurate and current as possible.

That both husband and wife be present if possible at the initial interview.
That appointments be attended promptly and adequate notice be given to Credit Counseling if an appointment cannot be kept.

That credit counseling be viewed as a long term solution and not a 'temporary fix" for credit problems. Financial problems usually do not happen overnight; neither do their solutions.

What is expected of creditors who agree to work with Credit Counseling?

That they respond within two weeks (10 working days) to a proposal for a specific payment amount from Credit Counseling.

That they work directly with Credit Counseling and not contact the client directly after accepting a proposed payment amount unless such payments are not made as agreed by the client.

That any changes to an account, such as new account number or transfer of responsibility for the account from one company or department to another be promptly reported to Credit Counseling.
