How does Credit Counseling work?

Anyone overburdened by credit obligations can contact Community Credit Counseling Specialists (CCC) for an appointment. A professional counselor, with previous financial counseling experience and successfully certified through an accredited educational program, will counsel the client to prepare a monthly family budget. If appropriate, the counselor will formulate a repayment plan, referred to as a Debt Repayment Plan (DRP), acceptable to the client and the creditors, for paying all debts. There is no charge or fee for this initial budgeting session, regardless of whether or not a client would decide to enter a DRP. If a client decides to enter a DRP, a one-time fee of $25 and a monthly maintenance fee of $25 is requested. These fees can be reduced or waived, and services will be provided regardless of the client’s ability to pay.

To insure the success of the program, cooperation between CCC, the client and creditors is vital, especially during the first 30-45 days of the DRP. The client must adjust to a new budget and the creditors must be patient while waiting for their first payment.

Many credit counseling agencies work with clients through “service departments” staffed by employees who work with all clients as a group. CCC clients are assigned to a certified counselor, who works individually with the client from the initial counseling session and throughout the completion of the DRP.

What is expected of Credit Counseling clients?

That information provided to CCC regarding net income, living expenses and debts are as accurate and current as possible.

That both husband and wife be present if possible at the initial interview. That appointments be attended promptly and adequate notice be given to CCC if an appointment cannot be kept.

That credit counseling be viewed as a long term solution and not a 'temporary fix" for credit problems. Financial problems usually do not happen overnight; neither do their solutions.

What is expected of creditors who agree to work with Credit Counseling?

That they respond within two weeks (10 working days) to a proposal for a specific payment amount from CCC.

That they work directly with CCC and not contact the client directly after accepting a proposed payment amount unless such payments are not made as agreed by the client.

That any changes to an account, such as new account number or transfer of responsibility for the account from one company or department to another be promptly reported to CCC.
